Increased Work Absence Rates Can Be Put Down to Money Worries
20 March 2011 - 17:43Leading payday loans provider www.mypayday.co.uk argues that new Office of National Statistics indicating that absence from work due to ill health is increasing can be put down to the stress caused by money worries.
Figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that sickness rates and absence from work have increased over the last year.
Ohad Hessel, Marketing Manager from Mypayday.co.uk comments:
"The official statistics show that during the recession absences from work due to illness actually fell. This doesn't mean that people were less ill – they were just terrified about losing their jobs so struggled through."
"What the new figures show is that more people were absent from work last year than during the height of the recession in 2009. We believe that money worries and the increased stresses and strains this causes on our health are to blame."
"Spiralling costs of living for everything from heating to petrol, food to fashion and more mean that the financial pressures on households are considerable and are being felt across the country. One way this financial pressure is being felt is by absence from work."
The Office of National Statistics figures show a big difference between men and women in the reasons for being absent from employment. Men were typically off work with issues such as a bad back, whereas the main reason for women was stress, depression and anxiety.
"Both men and women show stress in different ways and the figures suggest that as a workforce, we are particularly stressed at the moment."
